Tonight's Homework...

1.) Outsiders test
As described today in class, the 100-question Outsiders test scheduled for tomorrow is formatted this way:

Qs 1-21 = matching (characters, item/vocabulary)
Qs 22-31= quotation identification
Qs 32-63 = true/false
Qs 64-100 = multiple choice (mostly plot, some critical thinking)

If you followed along in class, participated in class discussion, kept up with all blog work, you should be prepared for this test.

For those who wish to review the plot (or were absent for a particular chapter), visit http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/outsiders/ to read summaries of each chapter. "Sparknotes" provide a super "extra tool" for students studying a text; however, Sparknotes should never be a replacement for actually reading a text.

2.) Outsiders video project -- due January 2, 2013
Today we assigned topics, began brainstorming theme statements. You should be using characters, events, conflicts in the book to help define/reveal/shape your theme statement. Make progress this week, finish before Friday afternoon, and free yourself for a fun vacation free of schoolwork!

  • Smart students will spend time tonight organizing their Reader Response Journal entries. Mrs. Smith will be collecting them on Friday.
  • Food for thought: "Theme" is a message about life revealed through a work of fiction. What messages about life does S.E. Hinton seem to be suggesting through her book The Outsiders? We will be exploring the themes of The Outsiders later this week.

3.) Twenty-Minute Habit, Log.

Tonight's Homework...

The Outsiders Golden Passage (from Chapters 1-6)
S.E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders is packed with quotations and descriptions that make the novel memorable. Some passages are so beautifully written that it's easy to forget S.E. Hinton was a teenager when she wrote the book. Just like a gold medal is awarded for excellence, a "golden passage" is special because it's the most memorable part of a text.

In your opinion, which portions of Chapters 1-6 are "golden"?

Review the instructions given in class today and prepare your "Golden Passage" poster exactly as directed.

Due Friday, December 7, 2012.

Tonight's Homework...

The Outsiders Reader Response Journal (Entry #5):
Review the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" presented in Chapter Five. This poem was written by American author Robert Frost, who grew up in nearby Lawrence, Massachusetts. Grab your copy of The Outsiders! Spend time tonight examining this poem and decoding its meaning.

You'll find this task easier if you...

- Use a dictionary to define words that are unfamiliar to you.
- Draw a line at each "stop sign." Decode the message in each sentence.

Once you are confident you understand the poem, prepare a typed journal entry that answers with supporting detail and specific examples BOTH questions below:

  • What seems to be Robert Frost's message in this poem?
  • How does Frost's poem relate to the characters and ideas of The Outsiders?

Grade Seven ELA Holiday Book Swap
Thursday, December 20, 2012
Our annual holiday tradition is back! Choose an age-appropriate book that you believe your peers would enjoy. Wrap it up and bring it to our swap! Remember: no one is expecting you to buy a brand new book; choose a used book from your personal shelf (not your sibling's, parent's or Smith/Hurley's!). Local libraries often sell used books for cheap money, and that's a great way to purchase an inexpensive copy of an old favorite. Which book will you bring to swap at our holiday celebration?

Tonight's Homework...

The Outsiders Reader Response Journal (Entry #4)

Chapters Three and Four are action-packed! We know Ponyboy is the narrator of The Outsiders, but how would the events of these two chapters be presented from the point of view of either Bob or Johnny?  Pretend you are either Bob or Johnny, then rewrite the scene in the park in first person, present tense. Think about what might be going through their minds as the scene unfolds. Both are thinking about more than just the violence that gets played out in the park. Are they thinking about their friends? Their families? The other social group? What are their emotions throughout the scene? Retell the story from Bob or Johnny's point of view!

Be sure to type your work.

This assignment should be the FOURTH entry in your Reader Response Journal for The Outsiders.

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 -- Day Mrs. Smith was absent

Tonight's Homework...

The Outsiders Reader Response Journal (Entry #3)
Please prepare typewritten answers for these three questions:
  1. At the drive-in Dallas harasses Cherry and Marcia. How is this choice of amusement a reflection of his character?
  2. Ponyboy and Dallas are shocked when Johnny orders Dallas to leave Cherry alone. What motivates Johnny to give the order? Why does Dallas obey him?
  3. Evaluate (tell me) why Cherry and Ponyboy communicate rather openly despite the gap in their social positions.
This assignment should be the THIRD entry in your Reader Response Journal for The Outsiders.
Coming Attractions:
  • We spent all of September, October and some of November studying the structure and organization of writing. We will have a TEST on WRITING  during class on Friday, 11/30. You will be provided a reading selection. After you read the selection, we will ask you to find the "parts of the house." You will consider questions like...
"Where is the thesis located?"
"What is the topic?"
"What is the thesis?"
"Identify the topic sentence of body paragraph ___."
 "Identify the transitions."
"Does the author have an introduction technique?"
"Does the author have a conclusion technique?"
This will be the first TEST of the trimester two!

1. With what social group does Ponyboy identify himself from the first paragraph of the book? How is he like the others in his group? How is he different from his peer group?

2. Tell about Ponyboy's family. Who are his family members and what are they like? What is Pony?s relationship with each of his brothers?

3. Who are the other members of Pony's social group? Describe each person.

4. When Cherry said, "Things are rough all over," what did she mean?

5. You just met Ponyboy, what do you like about him? What do you not like about him? Would you want to be his friend? Why or why not?

Tonight's Homework...

1.) The Outsiders Reading Response Journal (Entry #1):
Throughout our study of S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel The Outsiders, we will post writing prompts on this blog designed to help you think deeply about the book. It is your job to keep all of your journal entries organized in your binder. We will be collecting them all at the end of our novel study.

Let's begin our journal writing tonight with the two prompts below.

  • What is conformity? (Please see this link: http://www.simplypsychology.org/conformity.html). What are the costs and benefits of conformity or nonconformity to a peer group? How do we measure these costs and benefits?
  • How does a person's relationship with his or her peers affect the kind of person he or she will become?
Each response should be...
- Typewritten
- Roughly half page in length
- Demonstrating your best writing ability (no MUG errors, complete sentences, supporting details and specific examples).

This assignment should be the FIRST entry in your Reader Response Journal for The Outsiders.

Tonight's Homework...

1.) Finish your first Fry Challenge:
- Read "Life Among the Aztecs," using a stopwatch to track your reading time. This  Online Stopwatch is a good one to use.
- Immediately after you finish reading, record your final reading time.
- Now, test yourself to see how much information you remember from the reading by answering the three sets of questions (Comprehension, Maze, and Vocabulary) attached to the reading packet. Do not look back at the reading! The goal of the exercise is to determine how much information you can accurately recall from the reading.
- Tomorrow: We will calculate your reading speed. We will also correct your three sets of questions to calculate your accuracy rate.

2.) Twenty-Minute Habit, Log.
(Considering what we learned today about what is possible when we improve our reading speed, maybe it's time to increase your daily habit?)
This graphic is based on...
- 60-minute daily habit
- Six days per week
- Books roughly 70,000 words in length

  • "Illustrate the insanity" of your misplaced modifier sentence. Use color, be creative! Have fun.

We'll have a gallery of our MUG Art tomorrow, so be ready to share.

3.) Essay #5: "My Goal"

Are YOU reading this blog? If so, prove it!
Please post a note on the door to our classroom identifying your favorite number and explaining its significance. Your favorite number can be ANY number, but it must be personally meaningful to you in some way. For example, I would pick the number 9984 because it is the sum of...

   My birth year = 1975
+ My husband's birth year = 1976
+ My first daughter's birth year = 2010
+ My second daughter's birth year = 2010
+ My soon-to-be son's birth year = 2013
------------------------------------------------
Total = 9984

So what's YOUR number? Use an index card to identify and explain your number. Don't forget to sign your name!

Tonight's Homework...

1.) Margin Note Practice: "Medical Use of Marijuana"
Please use your margin noting skills to read this informative text that voters are using to become educated on this ballot question. Some of the information presented in the text will probably sound familiar from lectures in health education class.

"Question 3: Medical Use of Marijuana"

Remember: Mrs. Smith is not asking you to agree one way or the other; you are simply using your reading skills to explore an argument that many Massachusetts voters will consider on Election day.
I appreciate the feedback from kids and parents who report this week's margin noting assignments have sparked valuable conversations around the dinner table. :)

1. Agree or disagree with the following passage from the book and explain your reasoning:
"These were people so hungry for love that they were accepting substitutes. They were embracing material things and expecting a sort of hug back. But it never works. You can’t substitute material things for love or for gentleness or for tenderness or for a sense of comradeship."

Please choose ONE of the prompts below and prepare a written response due for tomorrow:

1.) Morrie decides that he wants his tombstone to read "A Teacher to the Last." When most people choose a phrase to list on a tombstone, they choose something that will encapsulate the life of the departed. Some tombstones read "beloved Mother" or "Devoted Husband," even "Cat Lover or "Kind to All Creatures." Others may offer a short poem or the lyrics of a song.
Think of a phrase or inscription that you would want on your tombstone. Then, write a paragraph that explains why that phrase captures your life.

2. Write your own Last Will and Testament (what material goods, skills, dreams would you give to someone else?). For guidance on how to write a Last Will and Testament, visit http://www.wikihow.com/Write-Your-Own-Last-Will-and-Testament.

3. If you could establish a foundation/charity, what would your choice include? Why?

Mitch is very impressed by Morrie’s stories and advice, and he discovers that the world can learn so much from Morrie. The book Tuesdays With Morrie is Mitch’s attempt to share Morrie’s wisdom with others.

Morrie believes that every person’s life can be a valuable teaching tool.

Think about the people you know (parents, grandparents, teachers, friends, neighbors, coaches, etc.) Choose one person whose life experiences can teach important lessons to others, and interview that person.

Ask them …
  • To tell a specific story about an important moment in his or her life that could teach others.
  • What important lesson did he or she learn from that experience?
  • What advice would he or she give to the rest of the world?
Take notes during the interview, and prepare a written report.
Bring the report to class on Friday, April 6, 2012.

Tuesdays with Morrie Writing Prompt:
Morrie's colleague’s funeral has a powerful effect on Morrie. Morrie comments about what a waste a funeral is because a person is already dead and cannot hear the nice stories and comments people are sharing. As an alternative, Morrie throws himself a “living funeral.” He invites friends and family over one day so they can pay tribute to him while he is still alive to appreciate it.
What is your opinion on Morrie's idea of a "living funeral"? If you were to someday have a “living funeral” like Morrie, what would you want people to say about you and your life?
  • Your response should be one page in length, single-spaced typed.
  • Showcase your best writing ability at this point in grade seven.
