HOMEWORK

1. Continue working in your "Tuesdays With Morrie Vocabulary Log".  Aim to complete all sections through "The Professor, Part Two."

2. Personal Response Journal, Entry #5: (Due Thursday, June 9, 2011)

According to Morrie, it is an absolute necessity that each of us has someone to guide us in life. He says that certain things in life do not happen automatically, that we have to have someone to point us in the right direction. In other words, we all need teachers in life; otherwise, we may follow the wrong path.

Teachers come in all types. There are, of course, often the teachers we have at school, but there are also people who teach us things who are not professional teachers. These people may be coaches, club advisors, religious or community leaders, etc. These people teach us how to manage life, achieve success and cope with failure.

Aside from your parents or guardians, who has been YOUR greatest teacher? Write a brief essay paying tribute to your special teacher, explaining who they are/were, specific reasons why they earned your respect, and how their wisdom will shape your life in the future.

HOMEWORK -- due Tuesday, June 7, 2011

1. Continue working in your "Tuesdays With Morrie Vocabulary Log".  Aim to complete all sections through "The Third Tuesday: We Talk About Regrets."

2. Response Journal, Entry#4:  In "The Classroom," Morrie tells Mitch that dying is one thing to be sad about, but living unhappily is even worse. Morrie goes on to say that most people are, in fact, unhappy, mostly because they try to follow what culture tells them to do, even though it’s not what they want for themselves.

For your next response, find an adult you admire and ask permission to interview them. During your interview, ask them these three questions:

  • What are some things that our society tells us we should do or be, even if that thing may not be right for us?
  • In your opinion, what seems to be society's definition of a successful person?
  • What is their definition of a successful person?

Take notes during your interview. Share the highlights of your interview in a one-page typed report.

HOMEWORK

  1. Continue working in your "Tuesdays With Morrie Vocabulary Log". Aim to complete all sections through "The First Tuesday: We Talk About The World."
  2. Personal Response Journal, Entry#3: In "The Student," Mitch explains about the failures he encountered in the years following his college graduation. Failure is difficult to face, especially when you are failing at something for the very first time. It is sometimes important to fail at something before you find ultimate success. Describe a time when you experienced failure in your life. What did you learn as a result of failing? In what ways can failure be a good and necessary thing?

HOMEWORK

  1. If you have not started already, begin defining words and crafting sentences in your "Tuesdays With Morrie Vocabulary Log". Please work backwards, beginning with the chapter titled "The Audiovisual".
  2. Personal Response Journal, Entry#2:
When Morrie and his wife Charlotte go to the neurologist’s office in "The Syllabus," the doctor has terrible news to tell them: Morrie has Lou Gehrig’s disease and he is going to die. This is certainly devastating news for the Schwartzes. Doctors are, of course, professionals, but it still must be difficult for them to deliver such bad news. How would you handle this situation if you were a physician? What advice would you have for doctors who at this moment might have to deliver sad news to a patient?
